June 12, Democracy Day - Buhari Changes Abuja Stadium To M.K.O Abiola Stadium

President Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari has during his presidential speech at the nation's eagles square renamed the Abuja National Stadium after M.K.O Abiola.

Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, famously referred to as MKO Abiola was a businessman and politician. He challenged for the presidency at the 1993 Nigeria general elections and was generally viewed as the winner despite the fact that the conclusive outcomes weren't discharged.

In 1994, he was captured and kept in jail on charges of conspiracy in the wake of announcing himself as the President of Nigeria. MKO Abiola kicked the bucket on 7 July 1998, the day he was expected to be discharged from jail.

In recognition of the life and heritage set by Abiola, the Lagos state government through governor Akinwunmi Ambode revealed the MKO Abiola Statue on 12 June 2018, precisely a quarter century after he won 12 June 1993 presidential political race in Ojota, a suburb of Lagos.

The governor said the sculpture would stay a commemoration of Abiola's heritage and the greatness that he represented to Nigeria's political scene

Since today marks the nation's Democracy day June 12, The President used the opportunity to rename the nation's prestigious stadium after the June 1993 presidential winner M.K.O Abiola.
