According to Vanguard Nigeria, management of the University Teaching Hospital in Jos, JUTH, has withdrawn the service of 25 doctors from the hospital even as the nation battles the ravaging coronavirus.
The sack got under the skin of National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, which solicited that the Chief Medical Director of the hospital to reverse the sack with immediate effect, particularly as the hospital is one of the isolation centers for COVID-19 treatment in the state
But the Public Relations Officer, PRO, of JUTH, Mrs. Bridget Omini, said;
"That there is nothing like that. I have confirmed from the Chief Medical Director, CMD, and he said there is nothing like that."
However, President of the National Association of Resident Doctors, JUTH branch, Dr. Stephen Lukden, who confirmed the development yesterday, said 25 of his members received their letters of terminations without any cogent reason to back up the management’s decision.
Lukden declared thus:
"Yes it is valid. Twenty-five Residents received letters of termination of their residency training and we have information that some will get theirs in the weeks/months to come. We have not seen this sort of thing before."
In a letter addressed to the JUTH CMD, Prof. Edmund Banwat, the association requested that the hospital’s management reverse the sack letters issued to its members describing the action as out of line and illegal.
The letter jointly signed by ARD President, Dr. Stephen Lukden and the General Secretary, Dr. Noel Nnaegbuna noted that the Medical Residency Training Act (MRTA) 2017 which was signed into law by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and gazetted on the 16th July 2018 specifies rules on the lead on the conduct of residency training program in the nation.
They called attention that the Federal Ministry of Health had likewise in a letter dated eighteenth June 2019 directed all Chief Medical Directors in the Federal Tertiary Health Institutions to immediately start the execution of the gazette.
The reason for the sack is yet to be disclosed, even as the nation needs the service of the doctors in the fight against COVID-19 which has hit a total of 3,145 in the country.
