Manchester United is targeting RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano to bolster their defensive options with the likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Eric Baily, and Phil Jones occupying that position.
United Boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjear plan to make the center back his second signing after completing a deal to sign Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek.
Netherlands international Van de Beek is expected to complete a £40 million move to Old Trafford this week after agreeing to terms with Ajax over the weekend. United has been pursuing the 23-year-old since January.
Upamecano sees Manchester United as his "dream" club, and RB Leipzig would likely demand €42-55M this summer, while United believe that they can do a deal for £37.5m.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to partner Upamecano with Maguire at the heart of his defence, after an impressive outing with Leipzig leading the team to the Champions League semifinals in Lisbon earlier this month.
The 21-year-old recently signed an extension to his contract until June 2023, but despite committing his future to Julien Nagelsmann's team, reports in Germany claim that the new deal includes a release clause of €42m, which can be triggered at the end of the 2020-21 season.
United manager wants to intensify efforts to boost his squad before the team's Premier League opener against Crystal Palace on Sept 19.
United expect to offload a number of their defenders during the transfer window, with Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, and Phil Jones all heading for the exit door at Old Trafford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also concerned about the reliability of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof, and the fitness record of youngster Axel Tuanzebe, prompting the signing of a new center-half.
