BREAKING: Court Awards N20b Damages Against FG For Raiding Sunday Igboho’s House

Sunday Igboho
Justice Ladiran Akintola of Oyo State High Court has declared the raid on Incarcerated Sunday Igboho house by the Department of State Security (DSS) as illegal and have ordered them to pay N20 billion for exemplary and aggravated damages.

Recall that the Soka, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, home of the pro-Yoruba self-determination activist was invaded by men from DSS about 1:30 am on July 1, 2021, leading to the arrest of 12 of his aides, while Igboho managed to escape arrest.

According to Akintola, the DSS’ action is “arbitrary aggression and prejudices” against Sunday Igboho's right as a citizen.

Following the raid, Igboho sued the Federal Government and demanded damages.

Igboho asked the court to order the respondents to pay him N500 million in special damages for the damage to his house and car, as well as N500 billion in exemplary and aggravated damages for infringing on his fundamental rights with the malicious invasion of his home, as well as an order directing the Federal Government and the other respondents to tender a public apology.

Igboho submitted the application to enforce his fundamental human rights through his lawyer, Yomi Alliyu, in accordance with Sections 33-46 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, as well as pertinent provisions of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights.

The application was filed in the Oyo State High Court's Ibadan Division on July 22.

Igboho also requested that the court issue an order instructing the respondents to return all of the things stolen from the premises.

He listed the things as N2million in cash, a thousand Euros, international passports for him and his family members, gold jewelry and wristwatches, two mobile phones, and other items that have yet to be identified but were illegally carted away by the DSS.
